The X‑Ray Ball Marker Built for Orthopedic Templating.
Every millimeter, exactly where it should be.
Akucal places a known-diameter reference marker at the anatomical plane, so your templating software has a true reference to scale from — not an estimate corrected after the patient's already on the table.
A templating measurement is only as good as its scale reference.
Source-to-detector distance, patient thickness, beam angle — every X-ray magnifies the anatomy by an amount that changes case to case. Template off the wrong scale and the implant size is wrong before the first cut.
Without a reference
Software assumes a standard magnification factor, or a technologist estimates one. Neither accounts for this patient, this table, this beam — so implant sizing drifts, and the error only surfaces in the OR.
With Akucal
A stainless steel sphere of exact, known diameter sits at the anatomical plane — the same depth as the joint. The known-diameter sphere provides the reference the software can use to establish image scale.
Three steps, done at the table.
Mount
Suction the EVO Suction stand to the table. On textured or padded surfaces — trauma boards, vet tables — the Flat‑base add‑on gives it something to grip.
Position
Swing the flexible arm so the Ball Claw holds the Rollr Marker at the center of the joint — the anatomical plane, not the tabletop.
Template
Expose the film. Major templating and PACS platforms — including OrthoView, mediCAD, INFINITT, TraumaCad, and Fusion — are designed to read the marker and use it to establish image scale.
Placement is the whole trick. A marker taped to the skin or set on the tabletop sits at a different depth than the joint — and inherits a different magnification. At the anatomical plane, the marker and the anatomy magnify by exactly the same amount, which is what makes the scale reference true.
What makes a better X‑ray ball marker?
A purpose-built system — not generic parts assembled into a marker. Nearly two decades in hospitals and imaging centers taught J2 Medical that marker choice is a systems decision: evaluate it on durability, serviceability, and workflow speed, not price alone.
Reads on the film itself
An integrated size indicator is visible directly on the radiograph, confirming which marker size was used at a glance.
Tool-free in seconds
The Ball Claw releases and reseats the sphere without tools, so cleaning or swapping sizes doesn't slow the room down.
Small footprint
The suction base is machined to a compact diameter, so it holds the marker at anatomy level without crowding the table.
Built to be sanitized
Smooth, accessible surfaces throughout — every part is designed to survive routine cleaning, not just tolerate it.
Akucal EVO Suction
Compact-footprint aluminum suction base for horizontal or vertical surfaces, with a flexible arm that carries the marker to anatomy level.

The literature agrees on where the marker belongs.
“Digital templating systems for total hip arthroplasty must use precisely placed scaling markers at the level of the hip joint to allow for accurate implant size estimation.”Ramme AJ, Fisher ND, Egol J, Chang G, Vigdorchik JM — “Scaling Marker Position Determines the Accuracy of Digital Templating for Total Hip Arthroplasty,” HSS Journal, 2018
“The flex arm is ideal for quickly taking images without having to find different objects to adjust the height of the sphere. In addition, the suction mount allows for easy locking and movement, and the sphere has great contrast relative to the holding fixture.”
